Introduction to Maya - Modeling Fundamentals Vol 1
This course will look at the fundamentals of modeling in Maya with an emphasis on creating good topology. We'll look at what makes a good model in Maya and why objects are modeled in the way they are.

Bench not casting Shadows

Hi All, I've modeled a bench seat for a friend to help work out what sizes for certain pieces. Now I'd like to take a simple render to show him. I'm rendering with mental ray and using a physical sun and sky.

Both the bench and the floor plane (which have maya_material_x on them) have cast and receive shadows enabled but when I render there is a shadow on the bench seat but not on the ground plane.

It appears in the first half of the render (first pic), but then disappears as the render finishes (second pic).

I'm probably missing something really simple. Any ideas?

I can take a look at the scene if you want.

Got it! My floor plane was scaled up really large with no divisions. When I changed its width and depth inputs instead of its scale the shadows showed up.

Renders fine here. In your second render, it doesn't seem like the plane is rendering at all. Make sure you didn't accidentally check "render selected objects only" under the render view's render menu.

Lol wow that is weird because I opened the scene and rendered with the missing wood texture and the shadows rendered fine. Well at least that's sorted. user added image
