I am using the Golden Gate to make a foggy landscape. Here is the beginning.

I have been using Maya PLE for a few months, now, on and off
when I have time (mostly at outrageous times at night...).
The bridge is in fact modelled after the GG bridge. I am still trying to decide how much detail I should include, like lamp posts, beams, etc. The system gets really sluggish when the number of polys starts piling up.
In fact, does anybody have ideas on a way to put enough cars on the bridge and with enough detail to look ok, without completely choking the system?

Hmmm. I'm sure I'd make very simple vehicles at the far end of the visual range, and have some more convincing ones in the foreground. Maybe details aren't that critical to the vehicles, but I think "character" is.

I will have to put some thought in the cars... not very easy...
And probably think of some boats too...

I would like to see the bridge you are modelling!
I got quite a few reference photos out and I am still not finished modelling the bridge itself. I need to see how much I can add without melting down my poor computer...
The fog in this image is done with the Paint Effects because I don't have Unlimited. I think the resultinf fog is ok.
Still much more work to do before it's finished though!

Yes. I like the city in the background and how the fog is coming across the water.

What's nice about Paint Effects is that you can still do a fly through animation since it's in 3d space..

Looking forward to seeing more.

What is your resolution set at?

Hi Hidalgo,
thanks for the comment!!! The city is actually billboarded over 3D terrain.
I haven't had any time to work on it this week, but will do it over te weekend, I hope, so stay in touch! user added image
The resolution is 1024 with low anti-aliasing.
I look forward to see your fluid effect fog!!!!!! It would be interesting to see its advantages against good old Paint Effects.

Very cool!

You should up the anti-aliasing to production and I bet you'll be more pleased with the result.

I have made a few additions.
Trial and error and experiments take so much time...

I think it looks great!

Add a few more cars though...I like the lighting on the one that's on the bridge.
