Maya is sucking my machine

Hi all

I've worked with Maya since version 3.
Maya 4 runs flawless on my Athlon 1800+ with 512MB RAM. I thought it was just enough for me.
but now Maya 5 is telling me all the time that the memory is low.
I'm rendering a simple model, nothing fancy, just some model of clothing with a texture on it, no background, no dynamics, no effects. When I go to see my system resources, Maya is using 1.18GB of memory (RAM+swap).

Is this normal?
Why since version 5 my machine can't handle Maya anymore?
I know it's not the ultimate system to run Maya, but at least it was when I was working on Maya 4.
