iam working on the furniture Tutorial. At the point with the legs for the table, i wanted to subdivide the cube. But when i do this (to see at the screenshot) it doesn`t work. My cube will be destroyed. Why is that so?

Subdivision Problem
iam working on the furniture Tutorial. At the point with the legs for the table, i wanted to subdivide the cube. But when i do this (to see at the screenshot) it doesn`t work. My cube will be destroyed. Why is that so?
