This course contains a little bit of everything with modeling, UVing, texturing and dynamics in Maya, as well as compositing multilayered EXR's in Photoshop.
Figured it out...I deleted some overlapping faces and sewed up some disconnected UVs. This fixed most of the distortion, but the smoothing algorithm still caused a slight problem easily fixed in the Texture Editor after smoothing. Just something I will have to do for the final render.
Just a quick update. Im satisfied with the basic color map and am moving on to blurring edges, adding color variations, tweaking the bump map, highlights etc. and then adding a basic ground plane.
