I dont understand what sub div are used for, i model in maya using polys and you can add a lot of detail by smoothing etc but why do sub divs exist i mean can whats the benifts to using em.
SubD's really give you the benefits of both NURBS and Polys. But it does have its drawbacks the same as any geometry type.
Also I have found you are able to be just as detailed with subD's and get better results than you could get with Polys and smoothing (IMHO).
There are explanations in the Maya Help Files on what NURBS, Ploys and SubD's are. But go buy a book or search the web for details between each and the pros and cons of them all.

another advantage of using subdivs along with polys is that you dont have to smooth to see the final result ...and you can choose the level of detail you want to work at.....and of course like polys and nurbs....sub-d'd have their own tools that are usefull...like creasing.
Well You can't really model with sub D's alone. To me it's more of a poly add-on. All it is really is a rendered version of a polygon, you'll end up using the polygon tools for it.
