I use Maya's default as well. I will try MR some day but not until I really need it. Back in my Max days I used it's default renderer + Final Render, which I found pretty neat but it had it's own cons...

you should not judge a renderer by what it cannot do, but what it can. if you seen no difference, then you did not need mr for your renders. the big advantages of mr beta over maya renderer are:
  • global illumination + final gather
  • caustics
  • dof not as postprocess, but while rendering

right, it cannot use pfx yet and therefore no fur either.

and my favourite renderer? any renderer - my model looks equally good/bad on any renderer user added image

I LOVE Renderman, especially PRman 11

its quality is amazing and now it has GI, caustics and raytracing

the new deep shadows are awesome, they give raytrace quality shadows at the speed of shadow maps (well only very slightly slower than shadow maps)

Oh and there is a work around to get paintfx while using MR or renderman, obviously it requires rendering a pass in MR or renderman.

In the Maya native render globals down in the paintfx tab there is an option to just render paintfx and nothing else, also there is an option to render fur as seperate files. These can then be composited

some big studios have reported a speed increase of about 300%

to get anywhere near the same quality in the native renderer would probably take a lot longer, but it all depends if you are using a lot of renderman shaders

good thing about that paintfx workaround with MR is that the lighting rig is the same, so the end result shouldn't look to much out of place, you might have to change the shadow settings coz MR has it's own shadow section in the light's attributes
