Maya 2020 fundamentals - modelling the real world
Get halfway through a model and find it's an unworkable mess? Can't add edge loops where you need them? Can't subdivide a mesh properly? If any of this sounds familiar check this course out.

How to animate adjustments in geometry edges/vertices

The subject is really wordy and I apologize. Basically I have this object you can (hopefully) see here:

A higher-res sub proxy is right next to it but that's irrelevant. Anyways, see how I have the edges selected and am about to rotate? This is what it looks like rotated:

I simply want to animate this rotation. I have no idea how to go about doing this or if it's even possible. The problem is because I'm not rotating the entire object and just several edges, there is no keyable attribute. Anyone better versed in MEL/PYTHON coding could help me out here?

I think blendshapes would handle effects like that.

I just looked blendshapes up and it seems like that would absolutely work for what I need. There are a lot of examples of it for facial animation but I see why the concept could apply. I'll try back when I get back to my Maya computer... but thank you!

This may or may not be easier than blendshapes, but you could attach the verts involved to a cluster deformer, and then just key the rotation on the deformer. Can you rotate cluster deformers? I think so.

Edit: yeah, I think cluster deformer is simpler than blendshapes.

Blendshapes transform the vertices linearly. Rotating a cluster will have the points rotate with it. You want to use a cluster.

Imagination is more important than knowledge.

Good call on the cluster deformers, didn't even think of that.

Thank you - the clusters did the trick!
