Maya 2020 fundamentals - modelling the real world
Get halfway through a model and find it's an unworkable mess? Can't add edge loops where you need them? Can't subdivide a mesh properly? If any of this sounds familiar check this course out.

old ruins

This is another project I had left behind for a while and picked up only recently. I appreciate any suggestions while it is still under way. The texture is only temporary.

ah ruins

Looks all right to me. The more slabs and slates and you put in the scene, the merrier.

As a peculiar note on detail, I think "they" used small metal "cramps" to hold the stones together. But if this is so, I don't think it was supposed to be seen.

ruin-making

Actually, it depends if you are talking Greek or Roman...
Greeks used a tongue-and-groove stone joint (I wander if I spelled it correctly...) because they only knew bronze, which is too soft for heavy construction. Romans used iron and concrete with the method you described.
Sorry for sounding like a smart-ass, but I love this stuff!!! And I grew up with Roman and Greek ruins practically in my backyard, so I have an "emotional attachment" to the subject...
But keep the suggestions coming!!!!!

adding on

It is so difficult to make progress when I get caught up in experiments... But that is part of learning, I suppose.

some help with textures?

I have started playing with textures to add detail and to replace the temporary texture I had started with by editing it and its bump map. Any suggestions appreciated...

have a laugh on me...

Ok, so is there any way I could have done the road looking somewhat this way without having to model the stupid stones one by one?

Ok this is it! If nobody has anything to suggest, I'll post it on the
finished work section.

I think you have to turn on the anti-alias settings in the render globals.

There is another thing with the light I think, but I'm not sure what it is.

It is very exiting as it is, but I question the color of the light.

thank you

You are perfectly correct, I rendered this at the lowest resolution because it was already taking ages to render...
If you could help me at all with the light I would appreciate!!! I have done my best to match the light with the picture in the background, but it's the 1st time I ever try anything like that, so I am sure there is plenty to improve.
