well id say thats your problem at a guess.., without going back over the thread.., if its a problem with import and save/export.., then with a PLE.., you have problems.., theres the water mark for a start user added image

Wot was the format of the import, some formats do not import well into Maya. This can cause issues with having on UVs, no surface shader, no materials, no or missing ploygons.

Post the file and someone will be able to view it.
