Complex UV Layout in Maya
Over the last couple of years UV layout in Maya has changed for the better. In this course we're going to be taking a look at some of those changes as we UV map an entire character

Rick, This looks great mate. Surprised you haven't shown it to me in skype. Appears you decided that quitting maya wasn't the best method to fix the bug you were talking about there last time you sent me a message?

Non the less, Great work, always love to see your end results.

George

Yeah I have been kinda busy Goeorge, sorry I have not pinged you much in skype.

Maya 2012 is still on my shit list. My lap top has version 2009 on it and I have been using it. I am running through older graphics drivers trying to see if one fixes the problem in 2012. ND posted me a link to the actual qualification page for gtx cards and that one had 170.61. But it had the same problem where the display stops refreshing and I have to stop and restart maya. So I continue to seek a solution.

But I have been using Modo more and more and release 601 is very stable and has some killer features. They already have a superior modeling toolset and they still continue to add fantastic features, the retopo stuff is AMAZING! Better the any of the dedicated retopo apps I have seen in fact.

But I must admit I still like NURBs. I had not used them in a while but for that barrel support they are perfect. I can get perfect holes in the cylinder, with perfect 0.03cm rounds, and I was able to project a perfect hole that clips the part at the base that was modeled in NURBs, and then simply rebuilt the patches to the mesh density I wanted, converted the patches to polygons, combined, attached, added some control loops and perfect poly part.

Is it easy to set up that wire on occlusion rendered look you had there? That's cool.

Here is an update guys almost done with the modeling. I have the insides of the rear sight, the tripod, and some small details to finish it up. I have only have an hour or two a day to fiddle with it so sorry it's dragging along slowly.

Update:

- Handle
- Trigger and other gizmos around the trigger area
- Frame of the rear sight
- Mount parts to attach to the tripod

To do:

- Inside of the rear sight
- Tripod
- small details

I was playing with the Jay's mental ray physical sunlight turn table tutorial on the site. Here are some shots using mental ray physical sunlight for the lighting...

Here are some of the detail shots. for some reason I had a hankering to model the safty wires and details that will hardly show. Also it gave me a chance to use a neat nurbs curve extrusion technique to create the twisted wires along a path. And they do look cool for tight shots.

I have not added much. I had a computer virus and had to reinstall my entire system. I still have to finish the rear sight details and model the tripod, ammo box, and ammo belt.

Finished the rear site asm. I might model the version that has a scope mount on the side later. All that is left now is the tripod, ammo box, and ammo belt.
