Did you use 3D or 2D? If your camera does not move, I highly recommend the 2D option, as it renders much faster and you have many options for smoothing the blur. Just change from 3D to 2D, and adjust the Blur sharpness and smooth values to your liking.

here's another test with my actor included and stand in sound effects, the only thing I didn't realize is that he passes in front of the T. rex, and I know practically nothing about compositing that kind of thing. can anyone refer me to some tutorials or books that could help? thanks

From the walking animation abpove ide say have him tilt more when he walks, and the feet should come down harder and faster. As it is trying to hold up all its mass with one leg.. it should come down pretty hard...

hmmm... that appears to be interlaced video.

I think photoshop has a tool for making interlacing.

also you might want to try "render feilds" in maya, I'm not sure what this does but I know it has something to do with interlacing.

Cheers! user added image

well I would suggest you deinterlace the raw video !. it will appeal better, and look better in my opinion. Most majer works are rendered out at 24 fps just like the film. Interlaced video is considered a step back.

But to answer your question I think the only way your going to get true interlaced like that is to render out at 60 frames per second.. all even frames and odd ones get rid of half your horistontal lines.. resize back to 1.33 aspect using normal intrapilation. Get VDub and find a filter to discard odd fields in odd frames and even in the even.. and combine the two, with pull down. Down to 30 frames per second..

The other option is to render Mr T-rex at 24 fps. and use 2 to 3 pull down scalling.. it will be a option in VDub and there is more info in places on the web. About converstions.

only 2 ways that comes to mind to do it for real.

wow, yeah, deinterlacing the original footage works just fine, I honestly did not think of doing that, thanks. my only problem now is the rex's personal motion blur. raytracing works independently, as does 3d motion blur, but combine them and render times shoot up, he flickers and becomes grainy. 2d doesn't work, he just becomes blurry all over

Pilot... Dont render with motion blur. Do it in post. You'll have more control over it. If you render with it, you're stuck with it.

Also, you need to work on the scaleing of the rex as he approaches the camera. He appears large when he's in the background, but as he gets closer he becomes smaller than the building. Try using a different lens setting for your camera or position the camera at a lower angle so that you're looking up at him instead of directly in front. If you want to get really technical, go back and measure the distances between the field and where you had the camera, then set up the scene in Maya accordingly, buildings and all, so that you get the right scale. user added image

By the way, really great job on the sound sync. user added image

someone else suggested that I do it in post, the only problem is that i don't know how to do that. if someone could point me in the right direction...

and about size, measurements are correct, he isn't a huge T. rex, he's only about 9 feet tall at the hip (so he can fit inside the building)

I recently came up with a new shot, showing my actor walking along in the reflection of the rex's eye, I think it turned out pretty well, i just need to get to texturing the rest of him...
