This is where im at with the new ocean shader (im no longer using the built in maya one)

user added image

I think the subtle enviroment reflection adds to the effect.

Comments welcome,

Cheers

hmmm...i don't know about the last picture your sea is just one colour but if you look at user added image
the sea changes colour, add a sampler info to the shader for the sea and use the facing ratio. lol i guess you could work it out your self

Haha, cheers mate! I'll thake those into concideration. I have lots of reference photos for the ocean, but when in Maya I somtimes lose touch with reality!

i'll post some progress soon

holy huge picture batman...

does your ocean shader reflect the hdri map, or did you map something to reflections?

Hi Neo,

the ocean shader reflects the enviroment, litterally (its raytraced). I'm rendering in layers with the enviroment all contained in its own separate layer. The HDRI was created from the 3D enviroment and is used along with a spotlight to light both planes.

Cheers

DJbLAZER : I'm running the sky texture through MRay at 1/5th its original resolution. I'll bump up the resolution before I render the final animation user added image

LEAPS AND BOUNDS BETTER, Jamie (not that it ever looked bad at all) The environment looks natural, and the detail on the aircraft is not obliterated! Damn, this is going to be one neat dogfight!

Minstrel : I've been in a split decision about adding in fog. What I decided was that if I do want to add the effect in I would add it in post production. I'll be rendering out a z depth pass anyway for true subtle enviroment dof which would allow me to add fog in too. So when it comes to all the fancy post processing i'll have a play around with adding fog in and post the results for people to comment!

Hey Jim!! Thanks mate! I've really worked at trying to create something as close to realisme as possible. Just wasn't happy with the previous enviroment and I'm glad I started again with the Ocean, its turned out better than I had hoped it would!

tadpole3159: sorry, im hosting these images on my own computer (the one I'm using to creat this dogfight on!) and it stalled while I was out at work so the images went offline. I'm in the process of sorting out my new hosting provider though, so everything will be running glitch free soon!

Thanks for all the support! Its really keeping me going especialy in my quest for photo-realism!

Cheers,

Jamie.
