Maya for 3D Printing - Rapid Prototyping
In this course we're going to look at something a little different, creating technically accurate 3D printed parts.

hey - thanks a lot for the kind words farbtopf and Phrosting! user added image still trying to get to grips with photoshop, so i'm sure it looks pretty crap in places!

the lighting is just a hdri image which i downloaded from

https://www.bencloward.com/textures_extra.shtml

you open up the mental ray tab in render settings, click on create under image based lighting and attach the hdri. think i saw happymat do it on one of his tutorials.

this render seemed to come out a little dark after I imported the taxis - not sure why. i'm hoping to get around to doing 'proper' lighting at some point. maybe. user added image

thanks t1ck135 and younglion. user added image

my main aim was just to get it looking like the original photo, which to me looks like maybe a cloudy grey day... i figured I would get the type of day when I do the regular lighting.

wow i feel sorry for you when you come to the part where you have to texture the billboards:p

I like your model of the street scene and the nurbs-car, I always use poly's to make my cars, since nurbs are so unforgiving, but maybe i will give it a try someday.

I think you could use some gansters, that deal in distributing american anime. lol i dont know if thats possible but o well. its looking really good, if you need more help on the cars i can get you a nissan 350z tutorial that is pretty good, i havent finished it yet though. user added image (i dont finish many things to often) but its looking great. or even better, a hobo that is selling american anime.

Do what you like, like what you do.

thanks mastone and daffas - yeah - i'm sort of sick of nurbs at the moment - i'm definitely going to keep working on the taxi, but i need to figure out how to make some of the parts. not sure if i've seen the nissan tutorial, but i'm definitely interested if you still have it daffas.

here's another render - more billboards and have been adding details here and there such as the windows on the red neon building. no gangsters just yet.

For the edges of your buildings, do you bevel them or leave them hard edged? In the renders it looks like you beveled because I see the edges curving, but in the wireframe I don't think I see the beveling. think you can show me an up close of the edges? user added image

I asked because I tried doing a house before and it was a pain tryinig to bevel all the edges.

Here's a little bit of inspiration for ya. I know you're having a very speciffic subject matter at hand and probably millions of ideas for the fun part. Texturing. But perhaps this can inspire.

If nothing else, it's cool HDR Photography user added image
PS: Check out the large versions to see some of that lovely HDR coming into play.
