one way that I know of is using layered shaders, with a redish layer at the bottom, a middle layer of a more skin-tone color, and a normal skin color upper layer... you'd have to play with it a bit... it also has some to do with lighting as well, I believe.

Played a bit with the textures and shaders. Also started testing various hair modeling styles. I think I'll go for the traditional way with nurbs planes and transparency maps...

Whoa! I certainly think you´re on the right track here, mate! (actually I knew it since the cranium change hehe) ... It has really improved a lot! I would be more carefull with the lips outline, it shows a somewhat of a smudge, might want to check it out.

I found this link in my Favorites folder, might help you out a bit with the hair (or even provide you with yet another way of making it)

PaintFX the ultimate hair designer
**edited** Yet another one --> Menithings Digital Hair

Hope it helps!

btw: I don´t actually like the first tutorial´s hair itself, but it shows a high degree of customizability so I pretty much suppose it could be shaped into anything you´d like.

Thanks for your input. I'll read the tuts. The smudged look of the lips is because I haven't finished the UV job. There's plenty of other (not so noticeable) texture stretching as welluser added image. I got bored and wanted to do something else for a while user added image

After trying out the Paint FX hair I decided to use it instead of the traditional way. Thanks adl for the great link. I've seen that before but I've somehow overlooked and forgot it. Here's a little update:

I'm still not satisfied with the hair but it'll do for now...
