I knew reference shots and all that fur covering the underlying body would be an issue so I feel happy doing the 'inside out' approach user added image

I'm still labouring with uv'ing the head and then its onto bump map time (influenced by swankymonkeys cool progress)

no posts for a bit as I've been battling with uv'ing the head. Tried the peltmap system and on a basic level it works ok. If you want it to give better results then you'll definately have to play with it a bit (or read the manual more than I did user added image )
Oh and I've removed the extra geometry I cut into the mouth area as it was really hard to get it mapped right.

I've just starting on the bump map around the mouth area. The nose and eyes will get some detail but the rest of the model will be covered in fur and not as important.

Lots more to do!

Looking pretty awsome T1ckL35. The more accurate you can make the base mesh model, the more of the chance you will have at winning. I reccomend that the final image consists of a base model without fur, and one with fur. I'm shure the judges will very pleased. user added image

Cheers guys, its the first 'proper' bump map I've attempted (apart from a post competition play with the samurai guy).
It took a bit of playing with the bump level to stop things looking huge and grainy but thats all part of the learning process user added image

After having read a few hair paintfx tutorials I'm actually looking forward to getting onto the fur after the bump, color and spec maps are finished user added image

Just for reference this one makes it sound doable:

Hey t1ck, the bump is looking pretty cool - I am keen to start messing around with bump maps myself, though at the moment I am in UV wasteland.

I am looking forward to seeing some fur on your polar bear. It's going to look cool. :attn:

And thanks for the paint fx link. user added image

Hey T1ck135

Hows it coming with paint effects fur? I've done a few tests using the tutorial you posted and it seems to work quite well.

Did you ever get going with Shave and a Haircut?

Dave

Hey dave, cheers user added image

Not had time to try yet (busy weekend and a superbowl party so yesterday and today have been wiped out user added image )
Going to finish off the bump and add a spec map quickly at the beginning of this week and then onto the paintfx. Is it fairly easy then? I was getting worried until reading those tutorials which seem to make it sound quite straightforward.

Have you got any samples of the tests you were running to see how good it looks?

I can't wait to see all the hairy animals *furred* up user added image

Quick update, I've started blocking in the main colours for the colourmap (the mouth at the minute).
If you wonder why he's a dark chocolate colour then its because polar bears have almost black skin under all that fur. Bizarre I know but definately interesting user added image

another good fact joopson user added image

Here's a shot with the teeth colours blocked in and a basic tongue thrown in. I need to start playing with the shader properties once the colours are all properly in.
There is no lighting setup yet either, just the default light.
