i tried to texture him.i think its a beginning and i think it looks strange too but i dont know why.

around the eyes look wierd, you textured it to boldly there

It looks good user added image
The bottom lip is a bit too bumpy. Maybe u could try drawing the bumps in a vertical direction down the lip and make them smaller user added image

around the eyes were too dark so now its lighter.and i also changed the texture on the lips

Mental ray is much more realistic..you might have to tweak it more to get the look right but you get the advantage of using final gather etc... I dunno what to tell ya if upping the max samples on the fur shape node didnt fix it.. Its probally render global settings then. (Upping the samples for me fixed it and I had a prob with fur that looked just like that when I rendered in mental ray.. im using maya 7.0.. so maybe somethings have changed.)

i decided to redo the texture as it was crap.i will try another methode.here is what i have done in 5 minutes.
