This course will look at the fundamentals of modeling in Maya with an emphasis on creating good topology. We'll look at what makes a good model in Maya and why objects are modeled in the way they are.
So I'm trying to make a cartoon version of myself, and I'm having a hard time seeing how I'm doing without hair, eyes, eyelashes, or lip color.... Basically, I'm wondering what makes a cartoon head feminine? Is there something I'm missing, or will this look like a woman when I add the final touches?
I tried texture mapping for lip color this morning, first time I ever used Maya's UV mapping stuff. It was a disaster... even when I got the lip color where I wanted it, she looked like a hooker. Can I just paint color directly on the mesh somehow?
I don't know how well it would work, i've never done it for more complex models, and it probably wouldn't blend into the rest of the face well at all, but if it's polys you could always select faces and assign the shader to those faces. But like i said, since it's lips the lips probably wouldn't blend into the face well at all.
Couple of years, but not too seriously. This is the first time I've really tried a biped character, as opposed to furniture and stuff.
For character modeling, "Maya 4.5 Fundamentals" has an excellent chapter on polygonal modeling. Seriously, it rocks. And I don't think it really matters what version of Maya you're actually using, it's basic stuff.
i have maya 6 unl.. woudl a book for 4.5 still be usable?? If so ill go get it now.. i dont know how many of you have seen my WIP's but they arent great.. but then again im new to 3d modeling all together...
The modeling chapter in 4.5 Fundamentals would definitely work for 6, but other chapters might be outdated. If the same author has an updated book with pretty much the same chapters, I'd go for it. In a pinch, though, you're not really going to miss out on anything as a beginner. Modeling is modeling in Maya, and you have to get over the first few humps before what version you're using really matters.
