Depth map shadows behaving badly.

Hello all, I'm having a slight problem with depth maps, they render fine apart from the fact that the shadows start a short distance away from the object, leaving a small gap where the shadow should start.

This only seems to happen if the objects are close to the surface that the shadow gets cast on..

Any ideas? Totally lost here.. thanks!
