Complex UV Layout in Maya

sub-d to poly help

Hello there,

I made this speeder with a sub-d body (pic 1) then decided that sub-d's really weren't for me so I converted to poly (pic 2).
That left a bit of a mess around the hard edges so I averaged the normals and set them to face (pic 3).
This gave me back my hard edges but also left me with a zeppelin effect on the parts that are supposed to be smooth. Is there any way to deal with the gridded effect while keeping the hard edges? Any help would be much appreciated, thanks,

Select the faces you need softened, then select Edit Polygons-->normals-->soften/hardnen option box-->soften all... or something like that. I don't have the program open right now.
