Maya 2020 fundamentals - modelling the real world
Get halfway through a model and find it's an unworkable mess? Can't add edge loops where you need them? Can't subdivide a mesh properly? If any of this sounds familiar check this course out.

baffling texture prob

maya is acting really odd with texturing everything. I decided to just try creating a spere and then used a sperical map on it. I then simply layed out the uv's and saved the image. Upon applying the uvs they are distorted and messed up which is also happening on all my other stuff. Does anyone have any idea as to what might be causing this because I am baffled. I have done this countless times before and never seen anything like this.

well, if its just a sphere, you dont need to UV map it, lol, it is pre-UV mapped.... on other models it must just be the way you are laying out the uv's...

Sorry I probably wasnt being very clear, I think it is something up with maya because I cant do uv mapping on anything. I was trying speres and boxes becuse I new if it wasn't working on them then it probably isnt something I am doing. I have started encountering other probs and am starting to think it is a gremlin so I might just do a fresh install and see if it fixes it.

here are some pics to show what i ment. This is a simple cylinder with a sperical map applied to it. I then simply layed out the uvs as a targa and when I apply the uv map back onto the object the vertices are not by any means where they should be.

what kind of map is the last one, is that a normals map?? don't know i am just curious, i am hopeless at texturing (and I believe in the power of positive thinking..?? )

take it easy and life will be easy

ummm... forgive me for possibly being ignorant, but why would you use a spherical map on a cylinder? Personally I'd be using a cylindrical map and a planar map or two...
