bevel vertex??

Alright I was trying to bevel the top vertex of a cylinder and it ended up beveling all the ones on the outside. Any ideas? Here's the screenshot:

Just a little more info.. I wanted to get that circle in the top.. but not split all those other vertexes on the edge.. hope that makes sense..
