Maya 2020 fundamentals - modelling the real world
Get halfway through a model and find it's an unworkable mess? Can't add edge loops where you need them? Can't subdivide a mesh properly? If any of this sounds familiar check this course out.

Displacement map artifacts

I am somewhat new to fully understanding displacement maps, but it mostly seems to be going fine except for this:

In mudbox I've sculpted a head of a particular president and it looks nice (at least to my liking), but when I introduce it to my lo-res mesh in Maya, the MR render gives me something that looks correct with the exception of artifacts that make the displacement look like terraced rice paddies.

BELOW IS THE IMAGE OF THE MUDBOX MODEL:

What might account for this?

Some notes:

-I have not applied filtering to the dmap (e.g. quadratic, mipmap, etc.)
-The image file is a 32-bit .tif
-the size of the map is 4096 x 4096
