Should I start with Maya?

Ultra-newbie here!user added image

I wanna learn to do 3d cars and garage scenes, etc. any thing related to cars. Is Maya the easiest to learn yet most powerful once you've learned it?

Thanks,
Owen

I wouldn't say it's the easiest to learn but there are lot's of great video tutorials to help with that here and it is the most powerful by far. I’ve tried lightwave and max but would never use anything other than Maya.

Cool, I had 3DS MAX 5 or so years ago along with some training books, but never could get very far. Now that I'm thinking of doing this again, Maya seemed like a very popular platform.

If you have no experience with other 3d apps, Maya is much easier to learn user added image

I started with Max a few years ago and had the hardest time changing over to Maya...it was right between the 2.5 to 3 versions. I was so used to how things worked in Max that I couldn't figure out how to do much in Maya without a lot of trouble....but as soon as I realized how hard it was to do things in Max and how simple Maya was to use, I started learning quite a bit easier and faster! I have dabbled a bit with Lightwave....I'll never figure that one out user added image....and have experimented a bit with XSI and Houdini, but for now Maya is where I'm staying put user added image

Heh heh, almost had me going there!
Anyway, I think I can download the personal learning
edition from their site, didn't read the fine print yet though.

OK well I downloaded it. What's the main difference between it and the full version?

It should suit while I'm learning though, ok so first question is,
how do I Pan with only two mouse buttons?

uhhh, i'm sure you can customize your keys in the options somewhere but trust me, if you plan on going anywhere with maya, go out and get a three button mouse. Its one of the most important tools for maya. also, its a requirement when you click "system requirements" for it.

also, for PLE: you cant load plugins. You cant load files done in PLE in full maya. You have a watermark. Thats all i can think of for now.

Man, you cant work in maya without a 3 button mouse.. simple as that. You have SO many tools that require a MMB drag, its not even funny. One thing i heard you say though.. that you had Max5 years ago.. i dont even know if its been out for a year yet, heheh. Max is good, dont get me wrong.. but once i tried maya i seriously would never switch to max. Max does have some aspects that are better though, im pretty sure its more powerful in the texturing field.. because they have a whole feature that maya doesnt have. Other than that, maya all the way!
