Maya 2020 fundamentals - modelling the real world
Get halfway through a model and find it's an unworkable mess? Can't add edge loops where you need them? Can't subdivide a mesh properly? If any of this sounds familiar check this course out.

Texturing prob

I'm trying to apply a simple texture to this object, but when i do, the top few faces become transparent. Any reason this might be happinging?

The transparent faces indicate that they have not been mapped correctly. At the very least, a cylindrical projection map applied to the whole shape should take care of it.

Yes, that indicates portions of a model that have not been UV mapped.
