How to create a world

For my game I would like to create lands, but how to do this best?
Should I (I already drawn a map and scanned it) place parts of my map on the maya interface and just stretch them out and model the land?
Or is there a better way?

a planar will only show up if all the points on the curve you used are on the same plane (the curve has to be flat or two-dimensional). as soon as even one point isn't, it'll disappear.

Accept no substitutions.

Ok, I've done it in an other way, I scanned my land in and made a copy to my Maya work area. Then I started modelling from a NURBS Plane. But now I need to know how to texture it. I want different textures for some areas. Can someone help me with this?
