Beer glass scene creation
This course contains a little bit of everything with modeling, UVing, texturing and dynamics in Maya, as well as compositing multilayered EXR's in Photoshop.

Back with another newb question. Character modeling

Hey All,

I am trying to watch a tutorial on how to do character modeling. I am getting good at doing everything else but cannot get a good character going so I decided to watch a tutorial. The issue is in this tutorial it goes very fast and theres no talking in it. Well he takes the model and mirrors it but when he starts working on it again, whatever he works on one side reflects on the other.

Here is the video, sadly I am stuck on 1:20. If anyone can take a look and tell me what he did to get this I would appreciate it. OR if anyone can guide me to a good free tutorial and creating characters I would very much appreciate that.

Code:

Thanks to all for putting up with such newb questions. I just got maya 1 month ago.

When you mirror your geometry, mirror it as an instance. Anything you do to the original, will reflect on the instance. You can find it in duplicate option box (I believe...I dont have Maya open, nor on my office computer.)

Could you use the hyperlink tag instead of the code tag, it makes following the links a real pita on an iPad.

He created a subdiv proxy. You can find it under the Polygons menuset under Proxy->Subdiv Proxy->Option (Little square). From what I can see by hitting play-pause-play-pause it appears these are the settings he is using.

SO now that the "who ram is bigger" portion of the thread, Thanks to all who helped.

Is there anywhere else that has character modeling for newcomers?

I am doing pretty good with everything else but I cannot seem to model a person to save my life.

Thanks

Even something simple as this.

There are many tutorials on the net.....heaps. The trouble with so many is that you will learn the WRONG way to do things as it has no quality control. IF you can get just a few dollars try and get one from here, they are competitvely priced and have a high quality production focus. It might cost a few dollars initially but better to spend that extra dollar if you have it, on higher quality food.

I know its hard for some people to come up with the funds but try if you can.
