Ok, gster123, I think you are right. I´ll try both ways.
Maybe a mixture of them gives the best results. We will find out.
I´m going to post my results as soon as they are finished.

Thank you all very much for helping me with my problem. I now have very much better imagination about texturing and bump mapping in Maya.
