I'm *trying* to model cleanly and its making it take a long time.

As a general question to everyone, on inanimate objects is it really important to make sure everything is quaded? I know it can affect the smoothing but I was just wondering how important it is?

Well i'm no expert but i made my own coffee machine with subdivisions and i found out the hard way that it's really important to have as few non-quads as possible. It seems to be ok if you have a few exceptions in certain places, but it's ideal to have just quads.

I suggest you use the polyproxy mode to see exactly where quads might not be vital and in general to have an idea of your smoothed model.

Hope this helps user added image

again no real time to do much this weekend user added image
I'd used a generic reference shot of a closure without looking in depth on the actual cello i'm modelling. Thus I've redone the closure to match this cello.
I've added a few extra little bits in and hope to get the bottom of the tailpiece finished in the next couple of days.
Strings will also need to come out of the cylindrical pieces inside the closures. user added image

Looking good T1ck. Like your modeling. I can imagine it was pretty hard to keep it all as nice and tidy as possible ( i know that for me it still takes quite some time and quite a few attempts until i finally get the modeling of an object right, but then again, i'm still a beginner user added image ).
It's truly beautiful. user added image

I'm hoping you get the lighting tied down and looking great in your scene user added image

It'd be great to get a full day at this baby to get the modelling complete and onto the texturing. I'm finding hard surface modelling a bit harder than organic at the moment (quadding all the extra lines and bevel edges can be time consuming!) but practice will change that user added image

Managed to get some proper time on this tonight user added image
Finished the tailpiece, added the section at the bottom of the cello, added some strings and attached them at both ends. Also started better shaping the body.
Just realised that its 19,000 tris so this is the most detailed object I've done user added image

Modelling todo:
- Keypiece and smoothed edge at the bottom of the cello
- Cut the holes into the main body.

Then texturing - woohoo! :attn:
