I only started learning Maya a few days ago also mate, i really advise watching some of the movie tutorials u can get here, and also on other sites such as 3dbuzz.com, they teach u everything from the absolute basics so its handy for us beginers.

Hope that helps

suggest learning shading, character modelling, skinning & skeleton, and then start modelling everyday things... might help

problems getting started

maya is such a big program, I'm new to it and it is like greek to me, I've watched the tutorials that came with the program and stuff, all I want to do is draw my own stuff, it seems all I have a choice from in the menu are shapes like cylinders and spheres and such. how does that work? do I draw straight on a grid then convert it to wire frame?
