September Challenge: Witchy - Normal

Blimey this is going to be a tough one! Great brief Mike, thanks for explaining it all so well.

I have never made or textured a low poly anything much apart from weapons, a streetlight and a few bits and bobs, so this should be quite a challenge in every sense of the word. And I'm a 'normal' what a joke!! At least I should provide people with a few hearty laughs.

I was momentarily torn between the future fortress thing and the hoarde like people. As I have never modelled a low poly person I think I will try and do away with my 'cute' reputation (fat chance) and go for maniac barbarian killers.

I am thinking of hunting around the White Dwarf type area for some concepts suiting the theme - will that be ok? I am not going to follow them specifically but just for ideas as I can't draw for toffee.

Two people in one month sounds like fun, at present I am thinking one hulking bloke and one dwarfy type, or perhaps a priest or rune casting support person. Let the casting off of cute and the ritual humiliation of beng crap in the normal category begin!

Popped together a couple of compilations of stuff I found off the net to help me along with the old concept thing (no point in drawing a barbarian stickman).

Barbarian warrior chap first;

And a dwarf like friend. I really am not going to be able to deliver this! But still, try anything once.

Well, making a start on the body and legs. Played with some boots too, they will need poly reducing, sadly, always liks boots. Nothing softened as yet. Basic shapes at present so I have something to build on and so I can make it roughly in proportion, need to add some more things to refine the shapes... background pics from fineartsk.

Thanks guys.

Sexah better than cute!

On a related note, does the 3000 max poly count and the texture sheets include a weapon and, if not, what poly budget / texture size should one use if a weapon is required?

3000 is the cap for the character and everything on him.

1 512, and 1 256 is also for everything on him, although, if necessary, a 2nd 256 can be utilized.

lol, I was going to be a little lenient when it came to textures, but I figured it'd be defeating the purpose of giving all of you a REAL job-like assignment. user added image

No it's only fair (bites own nails off) boss. user added image

Bit of an update- thickened the legs particularly at the thighs (Nataliia informed me barbarian needed to exercise), reduced boot polys, did some lower leg armour extruding, played with a poly shape for cloak, started a horned helmet from a cylinder. Had a go at a head as well which can be fairly basic I hope as the helmet covers most of it. Currently 1700 triangles, so need to reduce a bit, but thought I would do some arms and shoulder armour before deciding what to cut and where to go back and round a bit (like front of legs). Want to add a belt and a few detail things so need to make some savings. Was thinking of making his head smaller to make him look bulkier, although with body armour he'll beef up a bit - any views?
