So if I sneak into you're house and change you'r starting frame to -10 all you're projects would start at -10? user added image

I start at 0, because that's common sense number system. When you're at frame 120, you know you have 120 frames, not 119.

In the hypotetical case i were to sneak into you house youll find a missing HDD user added image

and then it will be no prob lookng whatever you have in it...
The starting frame: It depends, you might want to start rendering on frame 20 so that all cloth is settled...

Same reason as Vampus, and you can set your animation prefs so that when you click on the left-most frame it is zero user added image

My job requires that the timeline start with 0, but the animation itself doesn't start until frame 1.

I start at 0 and keyframe the original pose there so I can go back to the standard bind pose easily, then go from 1 for the actual first step or part of the movement.

I usually start at 1-- but then end up having to go into the negatives sometimes
it doesnt really matter as long as you use the renumber
frames feature in the globals

I'm not sure what you mean by "the bit between 0 and 1"..... There is nothing inbetween 0 and 1. There is no 1/2 frame. You have frame 0 and you have frame 1. If you can go to frame 0 in your timeline, you can render it. If you can't go to frame 0 in your timeline, you can't render it. Note that you can always choose what frames are rendered in the Render Globals window, however, so if you choose to render frames 1-120 even though you have a frame 0, the frame 0 will NOT render.

It depends, if I am working with cloth I start at frame -30 so that the cloth can settle on the model. If I am animating something without cloth I start at frame 20000 and work my way backwards.
