Maya for 3D Printing - Rapid Prototyping
In this course we're going to look at something a little different, creating technically accurate 3D printed parts.

Looks great. Bet your split-poly tool is broken by now lol.

please excuse the newbie question but, did you start from a rounded off cube perchance, or? ...

jay - definately, its just a bit laborious sculpting hair clumps and beard hairs

echo red - oh yes, you got it in one user added image I think that has been the most used tool during the hair buildup

bruce dwyer - yep, just a standard cube split down the middle and the right half deleted. Then it was instanced to the other side and the process of creating the head began.
I'll create a very generalised simple head 'blob' soon which will save having to redo the earliest steps of shaping the cube.

Here's a quick update of starting to work the beard. It has helped redefine the chin which looks better now (not that you can see it under there). I've not really had time to get on this in the evening recently (building rabbit hutches and playing travian etc user added image ) but should hopefully get some decent time in tomorrow.

Good start on the facial furniture Si,

I'm in the process of making some "general blobs" for the old Z brush sculpting.

cool steve, are we going to see them in a WIP?

Here's another little update, most of the beard features are in place and just need finishing off. Then onto the next step...

as if the hair wasnt enough

user added image i can see why you may have started with the hair ... patiance definatly has to be a prerequisite for all of the Visual arts ... and perhaps tenasity ... its looking good cant wait to see it in stone

Oh yes, this is more a test of patience than anything. In any other event I'd have got ZBrush and knocked the hair/beard out a lot quicker or played about with bump maps or whatever other techniques work.
As it is this will be good to experiment with stone/marble textures and with lighting (which I always seem to rush).

Nice progress Si.

I hope to get a WIP going, but I dont feel confident enough yet with Z to do something good.

Think I'm going to get the glen southern DVD for some reference.

I think a 3d texture placement would be a good start for texturing this beast (as its a block texture so it should start for stone), maybe with the incandesance "dust" style shader for the creases to give it some age??? Just a suggestion

cheers steve,
I'd say just dive in and experiment with ZB, it'd be good to see what you found out about it in your WIP and any nice tricks/problems that you find.
Maybe that could be a ZB style challenge for here - start with a generic head blob and take it to a state of completeness using whatever program you use....

sounds like a good idea with the texturing, if you have any tutorial links to stuff like that then let me know as I'm still in the basics when it comes to shaders etc user added image

hehe, yeah I'm still around although much of my time has been finishing up at work and learning 3Ds Max for a masters course starting this month user added image

Hope things are going well with you arran and THX1138 and as soon as I'm back into things proper you might see some of my stuff on simplymax (even though it often seems a bit dead on there).

Oh and happy new year! user added image
